RITES OF PASSAGE - wilderness magazine illustration
This article is about the loss of classic 'rites of passage'; in it's place a modern hero's journey. I wanted to illustrate three slightly different moods in this essay, pulling from different illustrative styles.
The first shows the classic journey; boy overcoming beast. They are almost one, the transition into man is seen as the boy absorbs elements of the wolf.
The other two mini-illustrations are of a boy leaving his family, featured in a more classic style with nordic references, meant to feel a bit like a children's book.
And the last is a simple native fishing spear, simple and slightly realistic.
